The Interior Design Details Most People Overlook

Renovations are a beast.
Interior design is not for the faint of heart. There are thousands of decisions layered into a single project, so many that most homeowners do not even realize how many choices are available to them. Over time, entire portions of the home have become standardized, not out of lack of care, but out of efficiency, habit, and the understandable desire to keep projects moving forward.
At Curio Studio, our role is to slow the process down where it matters most. We collaborate closely with contractors and trades while zooming in on the details that quietly shape how a home is experienced day to day. These are the moments that often go unquestioned, yet they are the ones you live with the longest.
These are a few of the design details we always prioritize, because they deserve more thought, intention, and care than they are typically given.
Grout Color
Just as paint has the power to completely shift the mood of a room, so does grout.
So much care goes into selecting the tile and installing it precisely. Yet, almost as an afterthought, white or grey grout is applied by default. In doing so, one of the most powerful opportunities for expression within a surface is quietly lost.
Grout is not neutral. It frames the tile. It can amplify pattern, soften contrast, or create a seamless field of texture depending on how it is chosen. A thoughtful grout color can elevate an entire surface, while an afterthought can flatten even the most beautiful tile.
Grout may be small, but it is mighty. Its impact should never be underestimated.
HVAC Grilles
HVAC grilles do not need to be white plastic eyesores scattered across an otherwise beautiful space.
A well designed grille is intentional. Sometimes it disappears entirely, taped seamlessly into the drywall and painted to match its surroundings. Other times it becomes a sculptural element, crafted by skilled metalworkers and treated as a design feature rather than something to hide.
This is where form and function truly meet. Comfort does not have to come at the expense of beauty.
Integrated Cabinet Hardware
Custom millwork has the ability to completely shift the energy of a space. It is architecture, furniture, and craft all at once.
Integrated hardware offers an opportunity to push that craftsmanship further. Rather than relying solely on applied metal pulls, we can work directly with millworkers to carve, shape, or recess the hardware into the wood itself. The result is a sculptural moment that is both visual and tactile.
These details invite the hand. They turn the simple act of opening a drawer or cabinet into an intentional interaction with the material. Grain, edge, depth, and proportion all come into play, allowing form and function to merge into a single, cohesive experience.
When designed thoughtfully, integrated hardware becomes an extension of the millwork itself.
Toilet Paper Holders
This may seem silly & trivial, but I assure you, it is not!
Using the bathroom is an inherently human and vulnerable moment, yet toilet paper placement is astonishingly often treated as an afterthought. We have all experienced the awkward reach, the uncomfortable twist, the realization that the roll is inexplicably out of range.
Placement matters and so does the object itself.
A toilet paper holder is not just a utility. When placed thoughtfully and designed with care, it becomes a small sculptural moment, offering dignity and beauty in one of the most human interactions we have.
Shower Thermostat Placement
Just because something has always been installed in a certain place does not mean it belongs there.
Shower controls are frequently placed directly beneath the shower head, forcing you to step into cold water or contort your body to turn it on. They can be moved. They should be moved.
Placing controls where you naturally stand when entering the shower, away from the water stream, creates a safer and more pleasurable experience. It transforms a rushed interaction into a quiet moment of appreciation before stepping into the warm water.
Good design anticipates the body in motion.
Switch Plates and Outlet Covers
Every home deserves better than exposed screws and stark, plastic plate covers.
Screwless plates should be the baseline. Beyond that, there is an entire world of thoughtful options. A plethora of colors, metals that patina with every touch, plates that integrate seamlessly into the wallpaper and millwork. Toggle styles that align with the fixtures they control.
These are elements you touch every day. They should feel intentional, tactile, and aligned with the space they inhabit.
These are the moments where interior design quietly reveals its value.
They are not about excess. They are about awareness. About understanding how people move through their homes, how they interact with their surroundings, and how small decisions compound into meaningful daily experiences.
